Restoration and conservation of tapestry-covered furniture

The restoration and conservation of tapestry-covered furniture is similar to that of mural tapestry; the choice of treatment depends on the historical value of the object, generally speaking restoration treatments are preferred as if the chairs are to be used they need to resist important mechanical constraints.
The tapestry covers are removed from the wooden structure by an upholsterer, the covers are stitched to a screen (to prevent shrinking during the cleaning treatment) surface cleaned and then cleaned by aqueous submersion with a non-ionic surfactant to be finally left to dry naturally.
The restoration technique is that used for tapestries ; after restoration the tapestry cover is consolidated (lined) onto a cotton fabric. The upholsterer then remounts the tapestry covers to their support.
